A smaller battery changes the role of the ID. Polo

Volkswagen’s all-electric ID. Polo is designed to make the familiar Polo concept work in an EV. In July 2026, Volkswagen added a 37 kWh net battery version aimed specifically at everyday urban use and commuting.

The smaller battery provides up to 334 km WLTP range. That is less than the larger-battery versions, but it also means buyers who mainly drive in cities do not have to pay for battery capacity they rarely use.

Volkswagen says the 37 kWh version starts at €24,995 in the Trend specification, with higher trim levels also available. Pricing and equipment can vary by market, so local prices should be checked before purchase.

Why a smaller battery can be the right choice

Battery size is often treated as the most important EV specification, but that is not always rational. A commuter who drives 40–60 km a day can have several days of usable range in a 37 kWh car and may spend most charging sessions at home.

A smaller battery also reduces vehicle mass and material requirements. The trade-off is less flexibility for long motorway journeys and more frequent charging on road trips.

Buyer question: if your normal week is mostly urban driving and you have home charging, compare the cost of the smaller battery against the extra flexibility of a larger pack rather than automatically choosing the biggest battery.

Where the ID. Polo sits in the 2026 EV market

The ID. Polo is part of a wider push toward smaller, more affordable electric cars in Europe. Volkswagen says the model is part of an urban EV family being produced in Spain, with the aim of bringing electric mobility to a broader customer base.

The larger-battery ID. Polo can reach up to 454 km WLTP, while the smaller 37 kWh model is deliberately positioned as an entry point. This gives the same model line two different use cases: affordable urban transport and longer-range everyday driving.

The bigger question: do buyers need 500 km?

The ID. Polo makes the range debate more practical. If affordable EVs can deliver 300–350 km WLTP and fast enough charging for occasional road trips, a large battery may become a premium feature rather than a baseline requirement.
